What the Vidzo Video Compressor does
The Vidzo Video Compressor makes a video file smaller so it uploads faster, fits through email and chat limits, and uses less storage. Choose a strength level, press Compress video, and compare the before and after file sizes.
It runs entirely in your browser. Your video is not uploaded anywhere, which also makes it a good option for private footage.
How to compress a video
- Drop a video onto the tool, or choose one from your device.
- Pick a strength: Light, Medium or Strong.
- Press Compress video and keep the tab open and visible while the progress bar fills.
- Review the result and the new file size, then download it.
Choosing a strength level
- Light keeps the original dimensions and lowers the bitrate. Quality stays close to the original, and the file gets moderately smaller.
- Medium reduces the dimensions to 75 percent and lowers the bitrate. It is a good balance for sharing clips and uploading to social platforms.
- Strong reduces the dimensions to 50 percent and uses a low bitrate. Use it when file size matters more than sharpness, for example for chat messages or quick previews.
How compression works here
Video files are large mostly because of bitrate, the amount of data used for every second of video. The compressor plays your video in the browser and records it again at a lower bitrate, and at smaller dimensions when you choose Medium or Strong. Audio is carried across with it.
Because every video is different, results vary. A video with lots of motion and fine detail shrinks less than a talking-head clip or a screen recording. If your file was already well compressed, the result may not be smaller, and the tool will tell you so. In that case try a stronger level.
Good to know before you start
Processing takes about as long as the video itself, and most browsers slow down hidden tabs, so keep this one visible until it is done. The output is saved as MP4 when your browser supports it, and as WebM otherwise.
Your original file is never changed. If the compressed copy looks worse than you expected, run the original again with a lighter setting.
Tips for smaller videos that still look good
- Trim the video before you compress it. Removing unneeded seconds saves more space than any setting.
- Lower the resolution to match the screen. A video that will be watched on a phone rarely needs more than 1080p.
- Avoid compressing the same file repeatedly, because each pass removes detail.

Is the Vidzo Video Compressor free?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.
Are my videos uploaded to compress them?
No. Compression happens in your browser on your own device, so your video is never sent to a server.
How much smaller will my video get?
It depends on the video. Footage with a lot of motion shrinks less than a screen recording or a talking-head clip. The tool shows the exact before and after size.
Why is my compressed video not smaller?
If the original was already compressed heavily, another pass may not help. Try the Strong level, which also reduces the dimensions.
Does the compressor keep the audio?
Yes. Audio is carried into the compressed file in browsers that allow it. If your browser blocks audio capture, the result may be silent.
What is the maximum file size?
The limit is shown on the tool. Very large files need a lot of memory, so a desktop browser works best.
