How to Compress a Video Without Losing Quality

Published 22/09/2026 | Updated 22/09/2026

Why video files are so big

Video is a long series of pictures plus sound. The biggest factor in file size is bitrate, the amount of data used for each second of video. A higher bitrate keeps more detail and makes a larger file. Resolution and frame rate also matter, because more pixels and more frames mean more data.

The goal of compression is to find the point where the file is small enough to share and the picture still looks good for how it will be watched.

What shrinks a file the most

How to compress a video with Vidzo

  1. Open the Vidzo Video Compressor and drop in your video.
  2. Choose a strength. Light keeps the original dimensions, Medium reduces them to 75 percent, and Strong reduces them to 50 percent.
  3. Press Compress video and keep the tab visible while it runs.
  4. Compare the new size with the original and download the result.

The work happens in your browser, so your video is not uploaded anywhere.

Which level should you pick?

Start with Medium. If the file is still too large, try Strong. If the result looks softer than you like, go back to the original and try Light. Because you always keep the original, you can try each level and compare.

Mistakes to avoid

Compressing over and over. Each pass removes more detail. Always go back to your best original rather than compressing an already compressed copy.

Shrinking too far for the screen. A video for a large TV needs more resolution than one for a phone. Match the settings to where it will be watched.

Expecting every file to shrink. A file that was already compressed hard may not get smaller. A tool that tells you honestly, as ours does, saves you from sending a larger file by mistake.

Compress after you resize

If you also need a different shape, resize first with the Video Resizer and compress second. That way you only re-encode a final time at the end, and the size reduction applies to the version you will actually upload.

Try it yourself

Resize, compress or clean up your video right in the browser. Nothing is uploaded.
